Not at all, eusociality is basically where individuals cooperate to raise offspring. So, it’s a social structure where individuals from a species work together as a unit to raise offspring. In essence, it means they basically agree to work for each other rather than just for themselves, so they work for the greater good.

The most well studied social structures like this are of course amongst the world of insects, specifically ants and bee and wasp colonies et cetera. The term is mostly used in the field of insect studies. But humans are also a eusocial species — some argue more loosely some argue even more so than insects.

At the heart of human eusociality is the cooperation between men and women when it comes to agreeing to work for each other with the goal of raising offspring. Sexual connections are at the heart of these social “agreements” between men and women. Of course, there is more to it than just that but without the bond between men and women it would be impossible for there to be eusociality.

The use of the term in this piece is simply to highlight one element of human evolution which led to the society we have today, which is built on social connections.

In terms of how a species becomes a eusocial one, I believe it was a Harvard study back from 2010 which concluded that the path to eusociality is through natural selection. Some still argue it is through kin selection, which was the past belief, but most are now of the consensus it is through natural selection. But it’s complex and the field is still very young in reality.

If you’re interested the best book I’ve read on eusociality is by Edward Wilson, it’s called The Social Conquest of Earth. A fascinating read if you’re interested, basically documents the believed path to humans evolving society as we know it i.e. where we all work for each other in the social structure that we call society.
Anyhow, as ever thanks for reading! Glad you found it interesting! :-)
