I saw it on a history of sex documentary on the history channel, can’t remember which one as was a while back, obviously there would be a lot of deviations across history but average age of marriage across history I believe is 19 for women and 26 for men and sex before marriage was rare for obvious reasons!
In fact, in most cultures if you had sex you had to get married, putting a lot off sex until marriage for obvious reasons.
Roman culture could be especially vicious to any who had sex outside marriage, the crazy thing about Roman culture is that the average age of marriage for women was 15, but for men it was 26, which meant there would have been a lot of frustrated young men!
Obviously, most men would have lost their virginity in their 20s rather than 30s, some sooner but with the average age so high many inevitably would not until later!
Tough world for men’s sex lives when sex equals babies, especially if you’re a man living in a poor family!
Hope that makes sense, Alan, thanks for the comment!
